6 PM .“Dream Sequins: a sound opera for Midsummer Soirée”. Poems by Penn Kemp with jazz pianist/new music composer Bill Gilliam and singer/songwriter Brenda McMorrow. Several of Penn's poems conjure the Aeolian Hall, that magic sphere. One portrays “Age Friendly” London. Others portray the dream life of London, including some adventures with the 19th century Londoner and world traveller, Teresa Harris. The participatory finale celebrates In Good Company! The evening will be recorded by John Magyar and filmed by Dennis Siren.
Primarily known as a poet, Penn Kemp has accomplishments as a playwright essayist, and editor. She has been celebrated by the League of Canadian Poets as one of the foremothers of Canadian Poetry, working across a variety of poetic practices to engage her audience. The University of Western Ontario’s recent writer-in-residence, Penn Kemp, is a one woman literary industry.
Bill Gilliam is from London, England and moved to Toronto after completing his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has composed for experimental film; dance, theatre and many Canadian new music artists and ensembles have performed his works.
Canadian Devotional Chant artist, Brenda McMorrow, began her musical career in the early 1990’s as a singer/songwriter. She co-founded the London, Ontario folk/rock band Julia Propeller – a campus radio and CBC favourite – which opened for and shared festival rosters with acts like Ani Difranco and Bruce Cockburn. Brenda’s rich musical exploration led her from folk to bluegrass to jazz and now her true heart offering is to share her unique blend of original melodies, world beats and sacred Indian devotional chants.
