Nagata Shachu Japanese Taiko Drumming Group
With its vast array of Japanese taiko (drums), gongs, bells, wooden clappers, shakers and bamboo flutes, Toronto-based Nagata Shachu (formerly Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble) has been enthralling audiences around the globe since 1998. The group made its Sunfest festival debut in 2005, but has never appeared in the World Music & Jazz Series until now.
While firmly rooted in the folk traditions found throughout Japan, Canada’s premier Japanese taiko drumming group draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its members in order to rejuvenate and redefine this ancient art form for the 21st century.
Under the direction of Kiyoshi Nagata, the ensemble has become known for its exacting yet physically performances on the taiko, as well as for its varied and challenging repertoire. With an emphasis on music and technical fundamentals over choreography and superfluous movement, the taiko unit has created a unique performance style that is powerful in its expression and beautiful in its simplicity. As Toronto music columnist Errol Nazareth noted: "Ace musicianship and innovative song structure aside, [Nagata Shachu] is all about the power of subtlety and silence."
